Abstract

This study examines in-depth the effect of smartphone use on academic achievement and social skills of elementary school students. Using a mixed-method approach, the study involved 200 students from grades 4-6 at UPTD SDN 10 Bangun Sari Village. The results show a significant positive correlation between structured smartphone use and improved academic achievement (r = 0.42, p < 0.01), particularly in subjects that utilize interactive learning applications. However, excessive use (>4 hours/day) was negatively correlated with academic achievement (r = -0.38, p < 0.05) and social skills (r = -0.33, p < 0.05). Qualitative analysis revealed that students who used smartphones purposefully for learning showed increased motivation and critical thinking skills. Social skills followed a similar pattern, with moderate use (1-2 hours/day) not showing significant negative impacts. This research highlights the importance of parental supervision, the role of teachers in integrating technology, and the implementation of school policies that support the wise use of smartphones to optimize their benefits in education.
