Reading culture plays an important role in meeting students’ information needs, while changes in information access have diversified the places used to obtain books. This study analyzes the transformation of Medan City students’ preferences from Gramedia to Kedebox and the factors shaping that shift. A qualitative phenomenological approach was used. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation from students who study in Medan, had obtained books from both stores, and experienced a change in preference. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification. Findings show that preferences are influenced by price, book condition and type, collection availability, search experience, convenience, and recommendations from friends and social media. Kedebox is valued for affordable used books and a more exploratory search experience, while Gramedia remains relevant for new or specific editions. The shift is therefore flexible and situational rather than absolute, reflecting changes in students’ information behavior and the emergence of alternative literacy spaces.
